United States (USA)
The United States has named its final squad for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany later this month. The USA had an usual qualifying route for this World Cup, as it didn't win the 2010 CONCACAF Gold Cup or even play in the finals. After losing to Mexico 2-1 in the semifinal of the tournament, the U.S. had to beat Italy in a playoff to make the field of 16 teams participating in Germany. At an average age of 27.09 years old, the USA will be bringing the oldest team to Germany for the World Cup. The No. 1-ranked team in the world will be counting on defender and captain Christie Rampone's extensive experience (228 caps) to guide them to the final match of the World Cup for the first time since 1999. Rampone was on the 1999 World Cup winning team for the United States.
Brazil
Brazil manager Kleiton Lima reduced his preliminary roster from 25 down to the final 21 players by cutting Gabriela Zanotti (who has a stress fracture), Maria Toscano, Andreia Rosa and Daiane Rocha. The World Cup begins in Germany on June 26.Defender Aline Pellegrino will wear the armband for the Brazilians but they will look to reigning Golden Boot winner Marta to provide the bulk of the scoring. Marta scored seven goals in the 2007 Women's World Cup and was also given the Golden Ball award for being the tournament's best player.Brazil is playing in Group D of the World Cup and will compete against Australia, Equatorial Guinea, and Norway for a chance at the quarterfinals. Group D was very good to Brazil in 2007. The Brazilians finished the group stage undefeated and with no goals conceded. Brazil will play Australia in the rematch of 2007's quarterfinal game, which Brazil won 3-2, on June 29. Brazil faces Norway on July 3 and Equatorial Guinea on June 6. Brazil is certain to qualify for the knockout stage being in this group. I'd be absolutely shocked not to see them in the final for a rematch of the 2007 final with Germany. The Brazilians have come in second place in the last two Olympics and the last World Cup.
